Movie Box Office Futures Betting Market Proposal Moving Forward, by Greg Tingle - 21st April 2010

Gambling and Hollywood do apparently mix, based on the proliferation of branded slot games found in online casinos and the Hollywood movie betting proposals currently being shuffled around the desks of Hollywood money men, legal eagles and bean counters.

Much of the Hollywood - gambling action started with the adaption of Hollywood titles from the likes of Paramount Pictures, StudioCanal, Warner Bros and Marvel Entertainment, later to find them in the likes of PartyGaming's PartyCasino and Virgin's Virgin Casino, it would certainly appear so, however that's not the end of the story.

Media Man and Gambling911 do a follow up probe of Hollywood, AussieWood and Bollywood, learning that proposals are moving forward. Hollywood must need the money!

Despite numerous attempts to stop the proposals, a second exchange proposing box office-based commodity trading has won preliminary go ahead by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The CFTC on Tuesday advised the proposed Cantor Exchange has green lighted in a review of its online technology and innovation et al.

The commission has previously approved similar technical underpinnings of the proposed Trend Exchange, which many budding gambling and internet entrepreneurs are grinning about.

The CFTC also must rule on product details of the exchanges, which the major film studios are opposing.

To get readers up to speed you you get a handle on it, the first two decisions have gone against Hollywooders, the MPAA and other industry groups continue to battle against the proposals.

Cantor Exchange and Trend Exchange had planned to begin trading as soon as this this week! The dates have been delayed pending final regulatory review procedure.

Cantor proposes to allow direct access to its online exchange, where users would purchase contracts selling box office projections, be it long or short, from six months prior to films' wide releases through the first four weeks movies screen in theaters. Trend Exchange would utilize brokered trades and halt trading once flix hit theaters.

In addition to lobbying the CFTC, Hollywood has recently opened a second front in its fight against the proposed exchanges in Congress.

A Hollywood-backed amendment was also added to the Wall Street Transparency and Accountability Act...a financial-reform Senate bill...to prohibit boxoffice commodity exchanges! The amendment is set for discussion this Wednesday by the Senate Agriculture Committee. There is a clear sense or urgency on this matters, and everyone is looking to make an extra dollar our of show business, but gambling entrepreneurs and Hollywood whales and wheeler dealers have different views as to how to go about it.

This Thursday, a House subcommittee that oversees the CFTC also will review the two exchange proposals.

We reckon Lew Wasserman from 'The Last Mogul' fame would love this stuff, however these happenings are leaving a significant paper trail, where as Wasserman basically left none!

Media Man birdies tell us that the likes of Google (Ventures and Enterprise), PartyGaming - InterTrader, Virgin Enterprises Limited inc Virgin Games and James Packer, Australian casino king - 50% owned Betfair, are watching this space very closely, as are Australian iconic actors and film entrepreneurs, Paul "Hoges" Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) Shane Jacobson (Kenny) and Mel Gibson (Mad Max). Australian talent agents and professional business spruikers, Harry M. Miller and Max Markson are also understood to have recently become aware of these happenings via Media Man and Gambling911 reports, and are finding the developments "interesting". Media Man plans to incorporate b2b elements of this specific sector into its business model.

Cantor Exchange and Trend Exchange, putting extra Business in Show Business. Without the Business, there is no show. If anyone gets a cut, including yours truly at Gambling911 and Media Man, we reckon its "deal on" for Deal Or No Deal, and just a case of Show Me The Money!

Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Offers Marilyn Monroe Boobs, by Greg Tingle - 19th April 2010

Planet Hollywood may have had its ups and downs over the years, but with revelations that the casino is going to offer patrons the opportunity to see Marilyn Monroe’s boobs in a most unique ways, patrons and punters are bound to get a high, and it's even tipped to help the chains bottom line.

Media Man and Gambling911 probe Planet Hollywood and Ms Monroe... not that sort of probe!

Ok punters, its an X-ray of the babes figure (eyes on the boobs for certain) that will be hitting the auction block cum summer time. Those in the know reckon it will fetch about a grand ($1000 bucks).

The virgin shot was snapped 1954 at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Florida as the blonde bombshell underwent surgery for a condition of the womb.

One of the surgeons snapped it and passed it to the family for safe keeping. His daughter has elected to put it up for sale at the vintage Hollywood-themed Vegas casino.

A wide selection on MM memorabilia which will go up for auction at Planet Hollywood on 26th June includes her therapy couch, a pair of skis and her Chanel No5 perfume.

Monroe fans the world over are expected to flock in like bees to honey.

Las Vegas casino bean counters are expecting some rise in takings, as are restaurants, nightclubs and call girls. Websites sporting stories, photos, multimedia and MM items for sale are also expecting a traffic spike. Rumors persist of an upcoming Marilyn Monroe online slot games. NextGen Gaming, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, FremantleMedia and Virgin have all said to expressed interest.

The Planet Hollywood brand was launched in New York on October 22 1991, with the backing of Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Gambling on movies: Regulators approve movie box office futures market, by Greg Tingle - 17th April 2010

Do gambling and Hollywood mix?

Based on the mega success of the adaption of Hollywood titles from the likes of Paramount Pictures, StudioCanal, Warner Bros and Marvel Entertainment, later to find them in the likes of PartyGaming's PartyCasino, it would appear so.

Media Man and Gambling911 probe Hollywood, AussieWood and Bollywood, with this special report.

United States law men aka "regulators" have remarkable approved the creation of a market for movie industry participants and speculators to trade on predicted box office receipts, despite its denouncement by Hollywood studios as "legalised gambling".

The decision by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission doesn't mean you can start trading right away on the Trend Exchange, so easy there punters. The commission is still reviewing the kinds of contracts - essentially presales of a share of future box office receipts - that could be traded there.

They are also reviewing a prop to create a second market called 'Cantor Exchange'. That one would offer reduced investment requirements than Trend Exchange, making it more appealing for movie fans and others to participate, thus luring in the general public who are by all accounts still mega movie fans at heart.

A ruling on the Cantor proposal, backed by Cantor Fitzgerald LP, is expected next week, while the commission has until June 7 to decide on the specific contracts for the Trend Exchange, which is backed by venture capitalist firm Veriana Ventures.

The two online trading forums would be similar to futures markets common for commodities such as corn and pork bellies. Although goods are rarely exchanged directly through such markets, they let buyers and sellers reduce risks by locking in prices months ahead of time.

Backers of these sort of box-office exchanges say those markets would help Hollywood manage risk in a notoriously hit-or-miss business. Investors would be able to hedge against potential flops by preselling a share of future box office receipts. The exchanges could even guard against likely hits such as the upcoming Iron-Man, Harry Potter, Twilight sequels and big name flix like Captain America, Thor and Avengers falling short of projections. If a movie doesn't do as well as forecast, investors would at least be guaranteed revenue from those presales, known as futures contracts.

One member of the futures commission, Bart Chilton, said he "reluctantly" approved the Trend Exchange because it fulfilled the legal requirements, and a deadline for approval had arrived. However, he noted his "significant concerns" about whether such markets could effectively help offset risk and avoid manipulation.

"At this point in time, I have not heard any arguments to persuade me that 'movie futures' generally can overcome some fundamental design flaws," Mr Chilton said.

A House subcommittee on farm commodities and risk management has scheduled a hearing for this coming Thursday on the movie futures contracts.

Veriana CEO Robert Swagger applauded the market approval and predicted opposition would ease over time.

"Historically, initial product skeptics have eventually become the greatest adopters through a process of time, education and communication," he said.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents the major Hollywood studios, had no immediate comment.

iGaming powerhouse PartyGaming offers a spread betting service through InterTrader, however is not trading on movies at this point in time, despite strong Hollywood connections. PartyGaming's casino does however offer movie themed online slot games such as Marvel Entertainment's Thor, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk. Sinatra and Rambo are among the companies most popular games to date.

Our verdict: Hollywood, gambling, the stock market and online casino games do mix... just check out 'The Last Mogul' featuring politics, mob connections, Hollywood and the like, and if you're still not sure, look up Sly Stallone, Arnie Schwarzenegger, Hulk Hogan and Ronald Regan, and we think you'll agree.

Frank Sinatra Land Based Casino To Close But Sinatra Slot Lives On At PartyGaming, by Greg Tingle - 1st April 2010

A Nevada casino once owned by legend Frank Sinatra and patronised by Hollywood stars and mobsters has closed due to plunging gambling rates and competition from the Vegas strip.

Media Man and Gambling911 investigate, as we mix it up with Hollywooders, journos, academics and mobsters...

Associations with the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior has not been enough to save the Cal Neva Lodge Casino from the distressed US land based casino industry.

The casino, situated on Lake Tahoe near the California border, last year saw its revenues fall to approximately 50% of what they enjoyed in 1992 allowing for inflation, tipped Mr William Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada.

Other local casinos continue to close or have downsized, unable to compete with Las Vegas, not in good shape itself – and the growing number of gambling resorts on Native American Indian reservations.

"The realities are when you have that kind of decline the weakest operators typically get pushed out," advised Mr Eadington. "The older, tired casinos and the Cal Neva is a great example, don't have much to offer for gaming."

Understood to be America's oldest licensed casino, the Cal Neva opened for business in 1926. The Cal Veva enjoyed its peak in the early 1960s when it was bought by Sinatra, reportedly in partnership with Sam Giancana, a Chicago mobster.

Adding a 35-seat celebrity showroom and rooftop helicopter pad, Samy and Frank ensured film stars, singers and Mafiosi enjoyed its blackjack games and roulette tables.

A network of underground tunnels, built to smuggle alcohol during Prohibition, allowed the VIP guests to move around the establishment without being seen by the general public.

Monroe actually spent the last weekend of her colourful life at The Cal in 1962 as a guest of the infamous 'Rat Pack' actor Peter Lawford and his wife.

Various stories circulate as to why the blond goddess was there. One story goes on to say she discussed making a film with Dean Martin and to patch things up with her second husband, baseball icon Joe DiMaggio, yet another Cal Neva regular. The other side of the story we learn is that a 1999 biography claimed Monroe was brought there to be threatened not to reveal her Mafia links, drugged in her cabin and photographed in compromising positions! Another Cal Neva rumour claims she used the resort for a tryst with John F Kennedy.

Staff concede the resort has traded off its colourful history but Guy Rocha, a former Nevada state archivist, said it would not register with younger gamblers. The hotel and restaurant remain open, but the tables, slots and other gambling activity are history.

"The Cal Neva doesn't capture people's imagination the way it once did," he said.

The Sinatra name is however alive and strong on the internet. Media Man has created an online tribute (with the help of Wikipedia) which is found here
http://www.mediamanint.com/profiles/sinatra.html and an authentic Sinatra online slot game, developed by 'The Games Studio' of PartyGaming fame is also showcased. Frank Sinatra Enterprises came to business terms with PartyGaming last year and the slot game has proven to be one of the most popular of all time, even competing with the legendary Cleopatra, developed by IGT (International Gaming Technology) and WagerWorks. Gangster and mob related games are some of the most popular found anywhere in the world. 'The Godfather' franchise also has an online slot game and rumours are circulating that Australia's late Kerry Packer (code named "The Goanna" in The Costigan Commission report) may also get the same treatment.

PartyGaming is also currently rumoured to be in discussions with the Canadian Poker Tour aka HeadsUp Entertainment, as well as enjoying M&A talk with Bwin and others. This past week PartyGaming inked a b2b multi year deal with Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU). Party will provide its poker product to its horse racing website. Party continues its global strategy with France, South America, India, the U.S and Australia in its sights.

Media Man remains optimistic about America's igaming industry growth, having created http://www.americangamingnews.com and http://www.hollywoodslotgames.com

A Media Man insider was overheard, "If only the U.S igaming market would open up sooner rather than later. We could kick some major goals under Gambling911 and the Sly Stallone - Arnie connection guidance. I guess we will have to stick mainly to poker and sports betting in the U.S sector for now, but when things change those Gambling911 guys, PartyGaming and the Media Man crew might just take over Vegas and Atlantic City... we could back door it in via Canada and North America with those Canadian Poker tournament guys. It will be just like the good old days, and you know history repeats my friend".
